It's been such a busy week. So many things have happened in this past week. Life, death and all the in between. One of the DJs that inspired me--along with a whole generation of Hiphop DJs coming out of the 90s-- passed away, Grand Master Roc Raida of the X-Men/X-ecutioners. I was lucky to have seen him live a few times but really fortunate to hear him break things down at Skratchcon in 2000. It's been a challenging week--of processing, weighing in priorities and the differences between practicality vs. life purpose. His death really had Justin and I thinking about how important music is to us. It's not just something we do as a hobby.
GM Roc Raida doin' one of the things he does best--body tricks!
So I've been meaning to put together Miles' first DJ set up since he practically kicked me off my turntables when we had a family session a few weeks ago. Last night, he helped me feng shui up our "DJ room" as he calls it--made room for his music space. He's a really happy kid having his first 1200 and mixer at his age already. He had to make sure he wasn't trippin', asking, "Mommy, this is for kids too?" After everything was set up, he had his first real Q & A session! After a couple bars, we'd go back and forth skratching and the whole thing really helped him practice taking turns. It was such a fun moment to have with him...
Have a good weekend and remember to seize the moment!
