Earth day was a blast! We hung out with Aunty Jen & Dengs and brought them to the store to choose seeds to plant with Papo. Miles chose watermelon seeds and Dengs chose lettuce. Since Papo is leaving for a few months in the P.I., it would be a great way for them to spend time with him, learning about the earth and also from Papo since he's the one with a green thumb in the fam. I talked to Papo about planting with Miles. He said he enjoyed having a conversation with him while they dug the hole and put seeds into the earth. This is what Papo told me...
Miles: Papo, did you plant all these flowers and trees?
Papo: Yes I did but I'm getting old so can you help take care of it?
Miles: When you pass away?
Papo: (laughs) Yes but also when I'm not strong enough and when I'm in the Philippines.
Miles: I'll take care of them because when I grow up I want to be a mechanic and a gardener. So when your car is broken, I will fix it too.
Besides planting, they also got to choose a cactus (low maintenance for kids!) and a pot to take home. Miles named his Spikes. We also did this celery & food coloring activity to show them how their cactus plants & trees drink water. So this morning, the first thing Miles said was, "Let's check the celery!" And voila, red leaves and all...
Besides Earth day activities, we've also been busy learning how to count beyond 20 as well as in Spanish and Tagalog. He's been thinking about language heavily:
Miles: I can count in Spanish and English. Can you count in Hawaii?
Me: No I can't. But dad can.
Miles: Cause he was born there? Where were you born?
Me: Chicago.
Miles: Where's that?
Me: Also in America.
Miles: How do you count in Chicago?
Me: They speak English there too...
Miles: Oh, then I can count in English, Spanish, and in Chicago. But my favorite is in Spanish. Unoth, doth, treths, cuatroths (he has a lisp!)
In other news, we are pretty bummed out about Guru passing away. So to commemorate him, Miles and I practiced our footwork to his albums. Wanna makes sure Miles is up on raw Hip Hop music. For our Wednesday Accepted Eclectic show, we did a tribute to Guru and Miles was our guest host. He did a GREAT job--and so did his dad--who mixed the tracks live...It's up for download too so lucky YOU :)
