After School Fun

We made a trip to the art shop and Miles chose different activities he wanted to do at home. With Halloween approaching, he chose orange and black clay to make what he said was "Halloweeny things." He also asked me what Halloween meant. I have no idea--maybe I should google it. But instead, I explained what Day of the Dead was--and how Pilipino culture celebrates it as some Latino cultures celebrate Dia de los Muertos, honoring those who have passed before us. Not sure how much of it went over his head but I hope to try to include some meaningful stories behind these holidays we celebrate. I'm thinking of creating an altar with him as Oct. 31st comes closer.

Making bats...

Making pumpkins...

He was in the zone...

When we got home from school today, the first thing he wanted to do was use his new finger paints.

"I love getting messy!"

DJ Mileskiii

It's been such a busy week. So many things have happened in this past week. Life, death and all the in between. One of the DJs that inspired me--along with a whole generation of Hiphop DJs coming out of the 90s-- passed away, Grand Master Roc Raida of the X-Men/X-ecutioners. I was lucky to have seen him live a few times but really fortunate to hear him break things down at Skratchcon in 2000. It's been a challenging week--of processing, weighing in priorities and the differences between practicality vs. life purpose. His death really had Justin and I thinking about how important music is to us. It's not just something we do as a hobby.

GM Roc Raida doin' one of the things he does best--body tricks!

So I've been meaning to put together Miles' first DJ set up since he practically kicked me off my turntables when we had a family session a few weeks ago. Last night, he helped me feng shui up our "DJ room" as he calls it--made room for his music space. He's a really happy kid having his first 1200 and mixer at his age already. He had to make sure he wasn't trippin', asking, "Mommy, this is for kids too?" After everything was set up, he had his first real Q & A session! After a couple bars, we'd go back and forth skratching and the whole thing really helped him practice taking turns. It was such a fun moment to have with him...

Have a good weekend and remember to seize the moment!

Love Love Love

Spending time with my family is all I look forward to really when the weekend comes near. Thanks to the camera on my phone, I've been able to take pictures of Miles but am reminded that I need to upload photos from my real camera so I can have pictures with a better resolution. Here's what Miles was up to this past weekend:

Visiting Aunty Xtina & Uncle Arjuna and yum, cupcakes!

Taking the Coit Tower tour with his dad and being in awe of it because it's in one of his favorite books, "Goodnight San Francisco".

Shopping with Dengs and checking out the trains.

Showing his dad that he can take him out! He really surprised us--skratching using the fader and everything!?

The weekend is around the corner and I'm so excited to study (sike), party with Darrien for his binyag (baptism), and have a date night with Justin cause Saturday also marks 4 years of marriage. Happy Anniversary Jus! I LOVE you. These are dedicated to you...

My Mama's Home Made Remedies

Being a mother is sometimes unbearable. When you see your child in any kind of pain, you feel so helpless. I wish I could just put my hands over my boy and just attract all the pain out from his body and into my palms and just take it all away. Wouldn't that be nice? I'm sure you can do this if you have special healing powers. I need to work on mine so I'll be better equipped for evenings like the one we had today at home.

Miles had a stomach ache, crying and complaining of the pain. I felt helpless, not knowing really what do to and frantically tried to remember what my mom did for me when I was a kid with belly aches. I think as a kid, what I sought for besides medicine to make it go away-- was comfort from the pain. Comfort was a distraction. Somehow my mom's love and attention remedied everything--even if all she did was put her palm on my belly and say a prayer. Sometimes I thought it was a bit silly how she did things like, touch her thumb to her mouth to dab some saliva on to my stomach and make the sign of the cross. Now that I think of it, that's such a Filipino thing to do--something that was probably a remnant of traditional medicine (the healing properties in saliva?) combined with the Catholic (& colonized) sign of the cross. Well, whatever it was--it made me feel better. Anyway, I almost resorted to rubbing my "laway" (saliva in Tagalog) onto Miles' belly in a desperate effort to relieve his pain! What a nurse I'll make some day. But I stopped myself after a week of trauma in microbiology (learning & fearing all the bacteria we carry-especially the ones in our mouth).

However, I remembered a few different things that my mom did for my tummy aches that made me feel better. She would boil ginger in water like a tea and make me drink it. I was thinking of that idea but wanted to try something that would not make him gag. Grabbed an old empty jar, filled it with hot water, covered it up with a thin towel and used it as a warm compress on his belly. So simple but it works wonders ;) Miles lay down in fetal position with this warm jar resting on his belly for awhile. After about 15 minutes of this, he got up and said he felt better. He unwrapped the jar and pointed to the water and said, "Mommy, look! My stomach ache is gone. It's in the water."

The other day, my brother aka Uncle Ewick as Miles calls him, told me he had this massive boil on his back, believing it was an infected spider bite. I diagnosed it as a staph infection (oh, micro what you do to me!). Anyway, Eric said that our mom saw it on his back and immediately grabbed a piece of garlic, peeled it and started rubbing it on him! He said it stung and I'm sure it did...But see, my mom still does all these home remedies that as a kid, made me think of her as having magical powers. But I was also secretly amused--and I still am. I appreciate growing up with all this knowledge to make me a better equipped holistic mama and nurse. I'm stocking up on garlic and ginger.

Labor Day Weekend

Friday night play date with Dengs.

"We're building San Francisco!" Miles explained.

We planned on going to Doin' It @ the Park for the outdoor massive party/bbq but started the day late. Instead, we went to Napa and fed the ducks. Miles was pretty happy with doing something as simple and fun as this...

Miles was having a conversation with this one.

He went through a whole loaf of bread! $2 of fun ;)

Rated G

What are certain things you would love to have as a parent--or if you're not a parent, what is it in life that you want or need? I would love to have 1) All the patience in the world 2) My own home business that supports my lil family 3) an on-call babysitter 4) an abundance of ideas/crafts to do with this boy...just to name a few off the top. Before, I wished for something like Baby loves disco but for Hip Hop families...and voila--it's manifested. Peep game:

So, let's see if I can make all the other stuff on my list happen...

Saturday Morning

Today I had breakfast with Bumbleebee.

Then he wanted to help organize his inheritance.

And as we cleaned up the studio he found Thomas gear from his first birthday (good thing I saved it).

We hope that dad will be down to check out some local Hiphop when he gets up:

So many fun free music events going on this weekend in the Bay...

Challenges

It is only the second week of school and Miles is already waking up, complaining about not wanting to go. "I'll just stay home by myself mommy. Just make me a lunch." No wayyy, buddy. Just think, I have years to go with this kid--he can be so stubborn (just like his father and I). The morning presents a challenge when he chooses to make it a difficult one, stomping, yelling, and pretending to spit at me. For the most part I am super patient and sometimes I'm secretly amused and would love to laugh at him for his pretend spitting but this morning was not one of my most super patient mornings. I feel guilty when I lose my patience. I don't like being mad and I am totally trying to be an example with my own emotions and show him how to breathe deeply and calmly but this morning I did not take my own advice. I yelled at him.

I know to some of you it may sound so terrible (it is!) and to some it may sound like no harm done--but to me, it is harm done. I wanted to take it all back when I looked at his eyes and he pleaded, "I want you to be patient!" But just like that, the words hit me like someone turned the thermostat from 100 degrees to a chill 65 and I was able to breathe and relax. I guess he was not the only one who had a tantrum! Anyway, I apologized to him & hugged him for a bit and he apologized, "I'm sorry mom," and then it was all good. Having a kid is a funny thing. Sometimes it's like having a mirror follow you around, showing you sides of yourself that you may not necessarily embrace but have to--and in that process, learning about yourself (and having compassion for yourself) as you try to teach them a different way.

Diggin' for Dinosaurs

After many afternoons of digging, and sweeping away the plaster, Miles was finally able to put all the bones together and enjoy his hard work! He probably will insist on wearing these goggles still.
p.s. This is unrelated to Miles and parenting but I just had to throw in there my new addiction to the Twilight series. I can't stop reading these books every chance I get. I will be sad once I'm finished with Breaking Dawn. Team Edward!

Hardwork to a 3.5 Year Old

With Justin leaving for Freestyle Sessions, we were pretty happy to spend some time together last night which included a trip to walmart and dinner at a local Thai restaurant. At dinner, Miles was pretty content playing with his new transformer toy, Mixmaster. I said to him, "You know why we bought that for you?" And he replied, "Yes. Cause I work hard at school." Not the answer I was expecting him to say so I asked, "And what do you do at school to work hard?"And he says so matter-of-factly,"I sleep sooo hard mom."

First Day of School

Today was Miles' first day back in preschool in teacher Beth's & Sarah's class. It was a little challenging to get him up early--he's use to sleeping in until 10--but we did it! He had an easy morning, being happily greeted by his buddy, Deonte, and also by one of his first friends, Nigel. He was a bit disappointed to find that his other homie, Amir (he calls him Ameera), is no longer at his school. But he also learned of his new classmate sharing the same name! Teacher Beth told me later that the other students were confused, "Why do we have another Miles, we already have a Miles?!" You gotta love the things these kids say!

Our whole family is pretty much adjusting to these new routines. I have to relearn how to focus in class and not day dream. I'm not really looking forward to a whole semester of microbiology (and a speech class, yuck!), even if it is my last semester before applying to the nursing program. I still got ways to go (2 years of a program--and even more if I want to become a midwife!). Can I do it? Will I do it? Well, I guess I have been doing it these past couple years, handling these darn prereqs. I need some inspiration asap--and also sometime to work on music--finish this mixtape that is almost done. My schedule is pretty crazy..I don't know how I did it last semester, or the ones before that. I really don't know how any parent does it?! I'd say this right here, blogging (& processing) is pretty much my down time for the whole day! Give thanks!

Miles' story time before he goes to sleep--is also my down time. After taking him a bath, helping him brush his teeth & changing into PJs etc., --it's reading time (so relaxing after a long day!) It's even more relaxing for me because the past couple nights, Miles insists that he reads to me (I just lay there)! I'm not kidding! He practically remembers word for word what is on the pages of his favorite books. Tonight, he read Knuffle Bunny Too. I usually ask him to pick 3 books...but he insisted he wanted to read Knuffle Bunny 3x's. So I was for it! Besides reading each page, and describing everything he sees--from the expression on Trixie's face "she looks so mad!", to the details of the pictures, "It looks so real but it's a cartoon too Mommy," he also likes to re-enact certain parts. He grabs the ear of his favorite stuffed animal, Bear, and holds it over to me and says, "This is NOT my bear," replacing Knuffle for Bear and Trixie for Miles. It's pretty much my night time entertainment and wind down time, a real treat at the end of a busy day!

There is light at the end of this long week...Miles' dad will be spinning once again at Freestyle Sessions in L.A. I really wish we made this a family trip! So many DJs around the world would love to spin at this event! Shoot, I would love to! This is perfect for Justin who seriously needs some Hiphop in his life after all this graveyard shiftin'...

But I booked a gig the same weekend so maybe next year. DJin' from 10 to 1:30 w/ Miles' Ninang Dee. If you're free Saturday--hit me up for the guestlist ;)

L.A. Bound Pt.2

The much anticipated road trip began pretty early for Miles but he was happy to go...

Got to the hotel but Darrien & Miles were ready to party.

They were trying to take off without us.

Dengs made sushi for the party.

Aunty Cheryl wanted a sushi hook up!

The boys preferred hot sushi, deciding to microwave it.

We Sang Happy Birthday to Lucy!

Honk! Honk!

We love you Lucy!

Nothing beats chocoalate cakes x bubbles!

Getting all sugared up! (Aw, my nephew is such a cutie, wouldn't you agree?!)

Lucy, Teresa, & soon-to-be baby bro (Lucy wanted to name him "control changer").

After cake was presents time...

And then the sugar kicked in and they were bouncing off the walls.

Back to the hotel and ready to swim (so they could get tired, and we could go to sleep?!).

Water-winged super heroes to the rescue!

The next day we stopped by Lucy's for brunch so the cousins could hang out.

They were happy to hold each other's hands.

Jengs x Dengs at Brunch.

After brunch, we were back on I-5 (thanks for driving Aunty Cheryl!)

Darrien was happy to go home :) (I love this boy's smile!)
